Sewer Emergencies
EMERGENCY LINE: (309) 370-8088
If you are experiencing a sewer system issue, call (309) 370-8088.
We have experienced problems in the past where a plumber is called and does work in the private building sewer that causes harm to the public sewer main. Therefore, we encourage you to call us.
For non-emergencies (odor complaints, slow drains, etc), the District typically responds (in person or via phone) the next business day. For common household odor complaints, many times putting water down the floor drain and making sure the drain plug is working properly fixes the issue. Here's a video on the topic.
For emergencies (active sewer backups, overflowing mains, etc), the District typically responds (in person or via phone) as soon as practicable after receiving the call. During wet weather events, the District must prioritize responses.
Please be aware that we have found that most issues relate to a problem in the private building sewer (blockage, roots, grease, wipes, etc). Problems in the private building sewer are the responsibility of the property owner.
All repair work must be done by a contractor that is licensed and bonded by the District. All repair work must be inspected by the District. This inspection is at no cost. The inspection department within the District can be contacted at (309) 272-4844 during normal business hours to schedule an inspection.
The District reserves the right to cease responding to or to bill an owner for repeated calls relating to private building sewers.
CAUTION: When trying to locate a sewer problem, never open manholes or other GPSD structures. Due to potential hazards, only GPSD personnel are authorized to open and inspect these structures.
