Sewer Backups: Common Causes and Prevention

GPSD experiences few sewer backups caused by GPSD-owned infrastructure.  This is mainly due to GPSD's sewer cleaning and inspection, sewer lining, and manhole repair programs.

Most sewer backups are a result of issues in the owner's private sanitary sewer (from the building to the point of connection with the publicly owned sewer) and are the responsibility of the owner.   Some of the main reasons for sewer backups include:
  • Blockages in a sewer line;
  • Tree roots infiltrating a sewer system;
  • Aging or damaged sewer pipes, particularly clay pipes; and/or
  • Excessive clean water directly entering the sewer system.
Taking preventative measures can help reduce the risk of a sewer backup.  Some preventative measures include:
  • Maintaining your private sanitary sewer.  Clean and prevent tree roots, repair broken pipes, etc.
  • Disposing of grease properly.  Never pour grease down the drain.
  • Disposing of products properly.  No feminine products, diapers, or paper towels should enter the sewer.  Never flush "flushable" wipes.
  • Disconnect downspouts, French drains, sump pumps, and other sources of clean water from the sanitary sewer.
  • Discuss insurance coverage before a problem arises.  Flood and basement/sewer backup coverage may not be included in basic insurance plans and would need to be added as additional coverage, if desired.

Contractor Selection

GPSD often hears about issues homeowners are having with contractors.  Common complaints include: poor workmanship, unnecessary upselling, and failure to diagnose the real problem.  For tips on contractor selection and to avoid home repair fraud, go to the Illinois Attorney General's website.
