Innovation at GPSD

At any time, GPSD is involved in a variety of innovation projects that have the potential to advance the science of the industry and environment and/or reduce costs to our customers.

GPSD has a long history of advancing the wastewater industry.    Participation can take the form of direct involvement in innovation projects, such as the biochar collaboration with Bradley University, and indirect involvement, such as membership in the Water Research Foundation.

GPSD has been known for its innovation activities.  Former Executive Director, Leon Kraus, is well known in the industry for having invented a novel treatment process here in Peoria.  The process is known as the Kraus Process, and is still studied in environmental engineering classes today.
Current Innovation Projects:
GPSD's scope of innovation currently includes involvement, either directly or indirectly, in the following projects:
  • Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal
  • Collaboration with Bradley University for Biosolids to Biochar
  • Drone sewer inspection
  • Wetlands/natural prairie research for nutrient reduction
